Isaac, son of Abraham and Sarah, father of Jacob and Esau, patriarch of Israel
Isaac, whose name means 'he laughs,' was the promised son born to Abraham and Sarah in their old age. His birth fulfilled God's covenant promise and occasioned laughter—both Sarah's incredulous laughter at the announcement and her joyful laughter at his birth. The second patriarch in Israel's lineage, Isaac passed the covenant blessing to Jacob rather than Esau, continuing the line through which all nations would be blessed. The prophets and psalmists invoke 'the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob' as the covenant formula identifying Israel's deity.
Senses
1. sense 1 — In these four passages, the name appears in its alternate spelling Yishaq rather than the more common Yitshaq, appearing in Psalm 105:9 ('the oath he swore to Isaac'), Jeremiah 33:26 (promising restoration to Abraham's, Isaac's, and Jacob's offspring), and twice in Amos where 'the high places of Isaac' and 'the house of Isaac' serve as poetic designations for the northern kingdom Israel (Amos 7:9, 16). The Septuagint consistently renders it Isaak, while the multilingual glosses show Spanish Isaac/Yitschaq, French Isaac, and German zu-Yitschaq, with some languages transliterating and others using the traditional anglicized form. 4×
