יַרְמוּת H3412
Jarmuth (Yarmuth), a Canaanite royal city in the Shephelah of Judah and a Levitical city in Issachar
Jarmuth was a Canaanite city-state whose king Piram joined the coalition of five Amorite kings against Gibeon, only to be defeated by Joshua in the dramatic battle involving hailstones and the sun standing still (Josh 10:3, 5, 23). Listed in Joshua 12:11 among conquered royal cities, it was later allotted to the tribe of Judah in the Shephelah district alongside Adullam (Josh 15:35) and resettled after the exile (Neh 11:29). A separate Jarmuth in Issachar served as a Levitical city (Josh 21:29). The site is usually identified with Khirbet el-Yarmuk southwest of Beth Shemesh.
Senses
1. Yarmuth (Canaanite city) — The proper place name Yarmuth (יַרְמוּת), designating primarily a Canaanite royal city in the Shephelah whose king Piram joined the anti-Gibeonite coalition defeated by Joshua (Josh 10:3, 5, 23; 12:11), later assigned to Judah (Josh 15:35) and resettled post-exile (Neh 11:29). A second Jarmuth in Issachar served as a Levitical city (Josh 21:29). Spanish and French preserve the form 'Jarmuth' closely, while the Septuagint offers Ierimouth, reflecting a different vowel tradition. 7×
