Jericho -- the ancient Canaanite city in the Jordan Valley, first major conquest under Joshua
Yericho (also spelled Yericho and Yerechoh) is the proper name of the fortified Canaanite city situated in the lower Jordan Valley near the Dead Sea. Perhaps derived from yareach ('moon') or from ravach ('spacious, fragrant'), the name evokes the lush oasis setting of palms and balsam that travelers encountered. With 57 occurrences concentrated in Joshua, Numbers, Kings, and Jeremiah, Jericho is best known as the first city conquered by Israel upon entering Canaan, its walls falling at the sound of trumpets and shouts (Josh 6). It also appears as a landmark for later events: the prophetic school of Elisha (2 Kgs 2:4-5), the capture of King Zedekiah (Jer 39:5), and the location of returnees in Ezra-Nehemiah.
