Jered is best known as the sixth-generation patriarch from Adam through Seth, the father of Enoch (Gen 5:15-20). His name likely derives from the root yarad ('to descend'), which later tradition sometimes connected to the descent of the Watchers. He lived 962 years according to the Genesis genealogy. A second Jered appears briefly in the Judahite genealogy as a figure associated with Gedor (1 Chr 4:18). The Septuagint consistently renders the name as Iared, reflected in the English forms Jared and Jered.
