Jonadab (Yonadab/Yehonadab), a proper name meaning 'YHWH is noble/generous,' borne by David's nephew and the Rechabite patriarch
Jonadab is a name with two very different bearers. David's nephew Jonadab son of Shimeah appears in the dark narrative of Amnon's crime against Tamar, where he serves as the cunning adviser who devises the deception (2 Sam 13:3-5, 32, 35). The other Jonadab — son of Rechab — is the revered ancestor of the Rechabites, whose lifestyle vow against wine, agriculture, and permanent housing Jeremiah holds up as a model of faithful obedience (Jer 35:6-19). The longer form Yehonadab appears in 2 Kings 10:15-23 where this Rechabite joins Jehu's purge of Baal worship.
