Joiarib (Jehoiarib); a personal name meaning 'the LORD contends/pleads'
A theophoric name combining Yahweh with the root rîb ('to contend, plead a case'), meaning 'the LORD pleads' or 'the LORD contends.' Jehoiarib heads the first of the twenty-four priestly courses (1 Chr 24:7) and appears in postexilic lists in Nehemiah and Ezra. In Ezra 8:16, Joiarib is one of the leaders sent to recruit Levites for the return. The shortened form Yôyārîb alternates with Yehôyārîb across Chronicles and Nehemiah. All versions — English 'Joiarib,' Spanish 'Joiarib,' French 'Joiarib' — keep the name stable.

Senses
1. sense 1 A proper name designating priestly and lay figures in postexilic Judah. As head of the first priestly division (1 Chr 24:7; Neh 11:10), Jehoiarib held a prominent liturgical role. A teacher by this name served under Ezra (Ezra 8:16). A Judahite inhabitant of Jerusalem also bore the name (Neh 11:5). The multilingual evidence shows uniform transliteration — 'Joiarib/Yoyariv' — with French and German sometimes leaving the Hebrew untranslated.
