The name is shared by at least eight individuals, but two dominate: Joash king of Judah, the boy rescued from Athaliah's purge and hidden in the temple for six years (2 Kgs 11:2; 2 Chr 22:11), and Joash king of Israel, son of Jehoahaz, who wept at Elisha's deathbed and was told to strike the ground with arrows (2 Kgs 13:14-19). The alternation between the longer Yeho'ash and the contracted Yo'ash appears even within a single chapter (2 Kgs 12-13), suggesting free variation rather than distinct referents.
