Jehoram/Joram — a theophoric name meaning 'YHWH is exalted,' borne by two kings and other biblical figures
Yehoram (or in its shortened forms Yoram/Joram) is a theophoric name combining the divine name with the root rum ('be high, exalted'). Its 29 occurrences refer to at least four individuals, though two dominate the narrative: Jehoram king of Judah, son of Jehoshaphat, whose reign was marred by the revolt of Edom and the influence of his wife Athaliah (2 Kgs 8:16-24; 2 Chr 21), and Jehoram king of Israel, son of Ahab, who perished at the hands of Jehu during the purge of the Omride dynasty (2 Kgs 9:14-26). The overlapping reigns of these two contemporaneous kings bearing the same name create one of the thorniest chronological puzzles in Kings. A Levitical priest of the same name serves in Jehoshaphat's teaching commission (2 Chr 17:8), and Joram son of Tou appears as a diplomatic envoy from Hamath (2 Sam 8:10).
Senses
1. Jehoram/Joram (proper name) — A Hebrew proper name meaning 'YHWH is exalted,' applied to several figures. The two most prominent are Jehoram of Judah (2 Kgs 8:16-24), whose disastrous reign saw Edomite revolt and Philistine raids, and Jehoram of Israel (2 Kgs 3:1; 9:14-24), an Omride king slain by Jehu. A priest by this name joined Jehoshaphat's Torah-teaching delegation (2 Chr 17:8), and Tou of Hamath sent his son Joram to congratulate David (2 Sam 8:10). The Septuagint consistently renders both long and short forms as Ioram. 29×
