Jehonadab/Jonadab ('YHWH is generous'), name of a Rechabite leader and of David's nephew.
A theophoric proper name meaning 'YHWH is willing' or 'YHWH is noble,' appearing in two alternate forms: the full Yehonadav and the shortened Yonadav. One bearer is the son of Rechab, the austere Rechabite leader who rode with Jehu to witness the purge of Baal worship (2 Kgs 10:15, 23) and whose descendants Jeremiah held up as a model of faithfulness (Jer 35:6-19). The other is David's shrewd nephew who devised the ruse by which Amnon lured Tamar (2 Sam 13:3-5). The two could not be more different in character, united only by name.
Senses
1. Yehonadab / Jonadab (proper name) — Jehonadab or Jonadab (Yehonadav/Yonadav), a Hebrew proper name meaning 'YHWH is generous/noble/willing,' borne by two distinct biblical figures. The first is the son of Rechab, the zealous Rechabite ancestor whose strict lifestyle (no wine, no houses, no agriculture) became a prophetic object lesson in faithfulness (Jer 35:6-19; 2 Kgs 10:15, 23). The second is David's nephew, son of Shimeah, described as 'very shrewd' (2 Sam 13:3), who advised Amnon in the affair with Tamar (2 Sam 13:3-5, 32, 35). Translations consistently transliterate both forms: Spanish 'Jonadab/Yehonadav,' French 'Jonadab/Jehonadab,' German 'Jonadab/Jehonadab.' 8×
