Jehoiakim — theophoric name meaning 'Yah raises up,' borne by the last-but-one king of Judah and two others
Yehoyaqim is a theophoric name combining the divine name Yeho- with the root qum ('to rise, establish'), yielding 'Yah raises up.' Its primary bearer is the son of Josiah whom Pharaoh Necho installed as king after renaming him from Elyaqim (2 Kgs 23:34). He reigned eleven tumultuous years (609-598 BCE), burned Jeremiah's scroll in defiance (Jer 36:23-32), and became a Babylonian vassal who then rebelled (2 Kgs 24:1). Jeremiah pronounces a devastating oracle against him: 'he shall be buried with the burial of a donkey' (Jer 22:18-19). The name also belongs to a postexilic high priest, son of Jeshua (Neh 12:10, 12, 26), and a Judahite in the genealogies (1 Chr 4:22). Daniel's opening verse dates the exile from Jehoiakim's reign (Dan 1:1-2).

Senses
1. Yehoyaqim The proper masculine name Yehoyaqim ('Yah raises up'), principally identifying the penultimate Davidic king of Judah. Of 37 occurrences, the vast majority cluster in Jeremiah and 2 Kings, where Jehoiakim emerges as a foil to his reforming father Josiah — a king who builds palaces with unpaid labor (Jer 22:13-17) and burns prophetic scrolls (Jer 36:23). The shorter form Yoyaqim (Neh 12:10) identifies the postexilic priestly figure. Greek Ioakim, Spanish 'Joacim/Joaquin,' and German 'Jojakim' all reflect the LXX rendering. 37×
