Yehoash (also contracted as Yoash) is a theophoric proper name meaning 'YHWH is strong' or 'YHWH has bestowed,' borne most prominently by two kings in the divided monarchy. Jehoash of Judah, son of Ahaziah, was rescued as an infant from Queen Athaliah's massacre and hidden in the temple for six years before being crowned in Jehoiada the priest's dramatic coup (2 Kgs 11:2-21; 2 Chr 22:11-24:27). He repaired the temple but ended badly, murdered by his own servants after turning from God. Jehoash of Israel, son of Jehoahaz, visited the dying Elisha and was told to strike the ground with arrows — his halfhearted three strikes earned only three victories over Aram instead of total defeat (2 Kgs 13:10-25). He also defeated Amaziah of Judah, breaching the walls of Jerusalem (2 Kgs 14:8-16; 2 Chr 25:17-25). Other bearers include a Judahite (1 Chr 4:22), a son of Ahab's steward, and a Benjaminite warrior of David. Spanish 'Joas,' French 'Joas,' and German 'Joasch/Yehoash' all render the name.
