Jehoahaz — a theophoric name ('YHWH has grasped') borne by kings of Israel and Judah
A theophoric name meaning 'YHWH has grasped' or 'YHWH has taken hold,' borne by several royal figures. The most prominent are Jehoahaz son of Jehu, king of Israel, whose reign was marked by Aramean oppression (2 Kgs 13:1–9, 22, 25), and Jehoahaz son of Josiah, king of Judah, who reigned only three months before Pharaoh Necho deposed him (2 Kgs 23:30–34). A variant form Joahaz (יוֹאָחָז) appears for some of the same individuals. The name is essentially an inverted form of Ahaziah (אֲחַזְיָה), both built from the same root אחז and the divine name.
Senses
1. Jehoahaz, king — The proper name Jehoahaz (יְהוֹאָחָז) and its shortened form Joahaz (יוֹאָחָז), identifying several biblical figures — primarily a king of Israel (son of Jehu, 2 Kgs 13) and a king of Judah (son of Josiah, 2 Kgs 23:30–34). Spanish renders 'Joacaz/Joacáz,' French 'Joachaz/Jehoahaz,' German 'Joahas/Jehoahaz.' The name's theophoric element ('YHWH has seized') underscores divine sovereignty over royal succession, an irony given that both kings met unfavorable ends. 20×
