יֵהוּא H3058
Jehu — primarily the zealous king of Israel who overthrew the house of Ahab; also a prophet and others
The name יֵהוּא (Yehu, probably contracted from 'YHWH is He') is borne most prominently by the tenth king of Israel, anointed by Elisha's servant to execute divine judgment against Ahab's dynasty (2 Kgs 9–10). Jehu's furious chariot ride and wholesale destruction of Baal worship became legendary — Hosea 1:4 later revisits 'the blood of Jezreel' as an act requiring reckoning. A prophet named Jehu son of Hanani also appears, pronouncing judgment against Baasha (1 Kgs 16:1, 7) and recording Jehoshaphat's deeds (2 Chr 20:34). Additional bearers include one of David's warriors (1 Chr 12:3) and tribal figures in genealogies.

Transliterations are consistent: Spanish 'Jehú,' French 'Jéhu,' German 'Jehu,' English 'Jehu/Yehu.' The lion's share of the 58 occurrences narrate his violent coup and purge of Baal worship (2 Kgs 9–10). The prophet Jehu son of Hanani (1 Kgs 16:1, 7; 2 Chr 19:2; 20:34) and a Davidic warrior (1 Chr 12:3) account for the remainder. 58×
