Plowmen, agricultural laborers (Jeremiah 52:16)
This rare verbal form refers to those who till the soil and work the land. It appears in the context of Nebuzaradan leaving behind the poorest of the land after the Babylonian conquest to serve as vinedressers and plowmen. The parallel passage in 2 Kings 25:12 has a different reading in the Ketiv-Qere tradition, suggesting some textual fluidity. The agricultural role represents the most basic subsistence labor assigned to those too poor to be carried into exile.
