Jebusite — gentilic noun for the Canaanite people who inhabited Jerusalem (Jebus) before David's conquest
Yevusi is the gentilic adjective and collective noun for the Jebusites, a Canaanite people descended from Canaan's third son (Gen 10:16). They appear 41 times, almost always within the formulaic list of pre-Israelite peoples — 'the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite' — that runs through the Pentateuch and into the Deuteronomistic History. The Jebusites' unique importance is their control of Jerusalem, which they held as the city of Jebus until David captured it by means of the water shaft (2 Sam 5:6-8; 1 Chr 11:4-6). Araunah (Ornan) the Jebusite, from whom David purchased the threshing floor that became the Temple site, represents the last named individual of this people (2 Sam 24:16-24; 1 Chr 21:15-28). Zechariah 9:7 envisages the Jebusite's absorption into Judah, like the clans that became part of Israel.
Senses
1. Jebusite (gentilic noun) — The gentilic noun Yevusi, designating the Canaanite population of Jebus (pre-Davidic Jerusalem). Most occurrences fall within the stereotyped list of displaced peoples in divine land-promises (Gen 15:21; Exod 3:8, 17; 23:23; 33:2; 34:11; Deut 7:1; 20:17) and conquest summaries (Josh 9:1; 11:3; 12:8; 24:11). The specific Jebusite connection to Jerusalem emerges in Judges 19:10-11, 2 Samuel 5:6-8, and the Araunah/Ornan threshing-floor narrative (2 Sam 24:16-24; 2 Chr 3:1). Spanish 'jebuseo,' French 'Jebusien,' German 'Jebusiter' all render the gentilic form consistently. 41×
