Heshbon — the Amorite capital east of the Jordan, city of Sihon, later Reubenite and Gadite territory
Cheshbon is the Hebrew name for Heshbon, the fortified city east of the Jordan that served as the capital of Sihon king of the Amorites. Its 38 occurrences trace a turbulent history of conquest and re-conquest. Israel captured it from Sihon (Num 21:25-26), and Numbers preserves an ancient taunt-song: 'Come to Heshbon! Let the city of Sihon be rebuilt and established' (Num 21:27). Assigned to Reuben (Num 32:37; Josh 13:17) yet on the border of Gad (Josh 13:26), the city was later designated a Levitical city (Josh 21:39). The prophets witness its return to Moabite and Ammonite hands: Isaiah laments that 'Heshbon and Elealeh cry out' (Isa 15:4; 16:8-9), and Jeremiah pronounces doom upon it (Jer 48:2, 34, 45). Song of Songs 7:5 offers a surprising comparison: 'your eyes are like the pools of Heshbon.'
