Hormah, a Canaanite city in the Negev renamed after Israel 'devoted' its inhabitants to destruction.
Originally called Zephath, this city in the southern Negev was renamed Hormah — a name transparently derived from cherem ('devoted to destruction') — after Judah and Simeon conquered it (Judg 1:17). The folk etymology is central: the place name itself memorializes the act of holy war. Numbers 14:45 records an earlier Israelite defeat there, and Numbers 21:3 narrates the vow and subsequent destruction that gave the city its name. Assigned to Simeon within Judah's territory (Josh 15:30; 19:4), it reappears as one of the towns to which David sent spoils (1 Sam 30:30). Spanish 'Horma' and French 'Hormah' preserve the name with minor phonetic adaptation.

Senses
1. Hormah (place name) The proper noun Hormah designates a Canaanite royal city in the Negev, originally called Zephath (Judg 1:17), renamed after Israel devoted its inhabitants to destruction (cherem). The name itself is an etymological monument to holy war. It features in the narrative of Israel's premature attack (Num 14:45), the successful campaign under Moses (Num 21:3), the tribal allotments to Simeon (Josh 15:30; 19:4), and David's distribution of spoils (1 Sam 30:30). Spanish 'Horma/Jormah' and French 'Hormah/Chormah' reflect variant transliteration traditions across language communities.
