Harim — personal name meaning 'consecrated/devoted'; priestly and lay families in post-exilic Judah
The name חָרִם (Charim) likely derives from a root meaning 'consecrated' or 'snub-nosed' (the latter a physical characteristic). It identifies both priestly and lay families prominent in the post-exilic community. A priestly house of Harim received the third lot in David's temple organization (1 Chr 24:8) and reappears in the return from exile (Ezra 2:39; Neh 7:42; 12:15). Members of this priestly family were among those who had married foreign wives (Ezra 10:21). A separate lay family of Harim also returned from Babylon (Ezra 2:32; Neh 7:35), with members likewise involved in the intermarriage crisis (Ezra 10:31). A Harim sealed the covenant under Nehemiah (Neh 10:5, 27). Spanish 'Harim' and English 'Harim' transliterate uniformly.
