Horite, member of the pre-Edomite cave-dwelling people of Seir; also a personal name in Simeon's genealogy
An adjective and gentilicname derived from hor ('cave, hole'), designating the indigenous cave-dwelling population of the Seir region before the Edomite conquest. Genesis 36 identifies Seir as 'the Horite' and lists the Horite chiefs as the original inhabitants of the land. Deuteronomy 2:12, 22 records that the sons of Esau dispossessed them, just as Israel dispossessed the Canaanites. The name also appears once as a personal name in the tribe of Simeon (Num 13:5).

Senses
1. sense 1 The gentilicdesignation for the pre-Edomite inhabitants of Mount Seir, understood as 'cave-dwellers' (from hor, 'cave'). Genesis 36:20-30 provides the most detailed account, listing Seir haHori and his descendants as the original clans of the region. In 1 Chronicles 1:39, Hori appears as a son of Lotan, a Horite chief. The name also occurs as a personal name in Numbers 13:5 for the father of Shaphat, the spy from Simeon. English and Spanish transliterate as 'Horite/horeo,' while French and German sometimes preserve the Hebrew in brackets, reflecting uncertainty about whether to treat it as a proper noun or ethnic adjective.
