Hazor — a major Canaanite royal city in northern Israel, plus several smaller settlements of the same name
Chatsor (Hazor) designates primarily the great Canaanite royal city in upper Galilee, one of the most important Bronze Age urban centers in the ancient Near East. Its 18 occurrences reflect a name borne by multiple settlements, though the northern royal city dominates. In the conquest narrative, Hazor is singled out as 'the head of all those kingdoms' under King Jabin, whom Joshua defeated and whose city he burned — the only Canaanite city explicitly said to have been destroyed by fire (Josh 11:1, 10-11, 13). The name reappears in Judges 4:2, 17, where a second Jabin king of Hazor oppresses Israel until Deborah and Barak deliver them. Solomon later fortified Hazor alongside Megiddo and Gezer as key administrative centers (1 Kgs 9:15), and the Assyrians under Tiglath-Pileser III captured it in 733 BC (2 Kgs 15:29). Joshua 15:23, 25 mention separate towns named Hazor in the Negeb of Judah. Jeremiah 49:28-33 addresses 'the kingdoms of Hazor' as an Arabian locality struck by Nebuchadnezzar. Nehemiah 11:33 records a Benjamite settlement of the same name. Spanish 'Hazor,' French 'Hatsor,' and German 'Hazor' preserve the name across traditions.
