Conj-w | V-Qal-ConjPerf-3cp  |  15× in 3 senses
To divide, halve, or split; in Qal, actively apportioning; in Nifal, being divided; idiomatically, to cut short one's days.
A verb of splitting and halving that runs from livestock economics to prophetic destiny. After wrestling at Peniel, Jacob divides his camp into two companies (Gen 32:7; 33:1). The law prescribes dividing the price of a dead ox (Exod 21:35). Moses apportions war spoil (Num 31:27, 42). Elijah and Elisha each strike the Jordan, and its waters 'are divided' (2 Kgs 2:8, 14). The Nifal passive appears in prophecy too: Ezekiel promises the kingdom 'shall not be divided into two' again (Ezek 37:22). Most poignantly, the psalmist warns that men of blood and deceit 'shall not live out half their days' (Ps 55:23), an idiomatic extension where dividing applies to the span of life itself.
1. divide, apportion (active) To divide or apportion actively (Qal). Jacob divides his people and flocks into two camps (Gen 32:7; 33:1). The ox-goring law requires dividing both the dead animal and its price (Exod 21:35). Moses halves the war spoil between combatants and the congregation (Num 31:27). Spanish 'dividio / dividiras' and German 'teilen' confirm straightforward apportioning. The Qal active places the agent in control of the division. 10×

2. be divided (passive) To be divided or split apart (Nifal passive). Elijah strikes the Jordan and its waters 'are divided' (2 Kgs 2:8), a miracle Elisha repeats (2 Kgs 2:14). Ezekiel prophesies that Israel shall no longer 'be divided into two kingdoms' (Ezek 37:22). Daniel foresees Alexander's empire 'divided to the four winds' (Dan 11:4). Spanish 'se dividieron / sera dividido' and French 'diviser' consistently mark the passive voice. Here the emphasis is on the result of division rather than the agent.

3. halve one's days To halve one's days, to die prematurely (idiomatic Qal). In Psalm 55:23, the wicked 'shall not live out half their days.' Spanish 'viviran la mitad' (will live the half) captures the idiom precisely. This specialized use extends the physical act of halving to the lifespan, creating a memorable image: God's judgment cuts the thread of life at its midpoint.
