Un término agudo de censura moral que marca a una persona como profana e impía. Concentrado en la literatura sapiencial — solo Job acumula ocho ocurrencias —, designa a quien cuya religiosidad es un barniz sobre una profunda corrupción. Job 8:13 declara que 'la esperanza del impío perecerá', mientras que Isaías 9:16 y 10:6 extienden la acusación a naciones enteras. Curiosamente, el cognado árabe ḥanīf pasó a significar 'quien se inclina a la verdadera religión', un sentido casi opuesto.
