Helkath-hazzurim, the field of swords/flints; site where Ishbosheth's men fell
Helkath-hazzurim (literally 'field of the swords' or 'field of the flints/edges') was the name given to a location near the pool of Gibeon where twelve men from each side—Ishbosheth's forces and David's—engaged in deadly combat, with each man grabbing his opponent and thrusting his sword into his side, so that all twenty-four fell together. The name appears twice in 2 Samuel 2:16 as both the place name and its explanation. The etymology suggests either 'field of sword-edges' or possibly 'field of the plotters/adversaries.'

Senses
1. sense 1 A place name and descriptive designation for the site of a deadly contest at Gibeon. 2 Samuel 2:16 states, 'Therefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in Gibeon,' with both occurrences in the same verse. The name combines 'field' (חלקה) with either 'swords/edges' (צרים) or 'plotters/adversaries,' eternally marking the site of this violent encounter. The Septuagint's 'portion of the plotters' (Μέρις τῶν ἐπιβούλων) reflects one interpretation, while modern versions often translate it as 'field of swords' or leave it as a proper name.
