Chelqai (or Helkai), a priest in Nehemiah's time
Chelqai was a priest serving during the high priesthood of Joiakim, son of Jeshua, in the early post-exilic period. Nehemiah 12:15 lists him among the priestly heads of families in the restored Jerusalem community. The name may be an abbreviated form of Hilkiah, a common priestly name meaning 'my portion is Yahweh.' Such name variations and abbreviations were typical in genealogical records.
Senses
1. sense 1 — A personal name of a post-exilic priest. The Septuagint rendering 'Chelkias' (similar to Hilkiah) supports the view that this is a shortened form. Multilingual versions show transliteration (Chelqai, Helcai) as expected for proper names. Nehemiah 12:15 places him in the genealogical framework of priestly families serving the Second Temple, part of the restoration community's reconstituted worship. 1×
