Mientras חָלָל I se refiere a víctimas del campo de batalla, esta palabra describe a personas que han quedado ceremonial o moralmente contaminadas. En Levítico 21:7, 14, se aplica a una mujer sexualmente deshonrada: un sacerdote no puede casarse con ella. En Ezequiel 21:25, 29, califica a un 'profano e impío', probablemente un gobernante cuya autoridad ha sido profanada por su infidelidad.
