pierce, wound fatally; profane, defile what is sacred
A verb whose primary physical sense is to bore through or pierce, often with fatal consequences. In one of Scripture's most theologically charged verses, the Servant is 'pierced for our transgressions' (Isa 53:5, Pual), while God's hand 'pierced the fleeing serpent' (Job 26:13). The psalmist's cry 'my heart is pierced within me' (Ps 109:22) internalizes the wound as anguish. A secondary sense moves into the sacral realm: in Ezek 28:9, the proud king of Tyre faces 'those who profane you,' where piercing becomes desecration.
Senses
1. pierce, wound fatally — To bore through, pierce, or wound mortally, whether physically or metaphorically. Applied to cosmic combat (Job 26:13, piercing the serpent), vicarious suffering (Isa 53:5, the Servant pierced for transgressions), and inner anguish (Ps 109:22, the heart pierced within). Spanish distinguishes nicely: 'fue herido' (was wounded) for Isaiah, 'atravesados' (transfixed) for those slain in Ezek 32:26, and 'formo' (formed/pierced) for Job's primordial imagery. 5×

2. profane, defile — To profane, violate, or defile what is sacred, treating the holy as common. Attested in the Piel participle in Ezek 28:9, where the king of Tyre will be confronted by 'those profaning you.' Spanish 'los que te profanen' and English 'those profaning you' both render the sacral violation clearly. This sense is sometimes treated as a separate root (chalal II) in standard lexica. 1×
