Helah, one of the two wives of Ashur, father of Tekoa
Helah was one of the two wives of Ashur in the genealogies of Judah. Ashur is called the 'father of Tekoa,' probably indicating he was the founder or leading figure of that town. The name Helah appears twice in 1 Chronicles 4, with her children listed in verse 7. The name's meaning is uncertain (BDB notes 'meaning dub.'), and the Septuagint shows considerable variation in attempting to render it in Greek.
Senses
1. sense 1 — A feminine proper name in the Judahite genealogies. 1 Chronicles 4:5 introduces Ashur's two wives, Helah and Naarah, while verse 7 lists 'the sons of Helah: Zereth, Izhar, and Ethnan.' The wide range of Septuagint variants (Αωδα, Αοαδα, Αλαα, Ελαα, Ελεα) suggests the Greek translators found this an unfamiliar name. Modern versions consistently use Helah or its equivalent (Jelea, Chel'ah). 2×
