Haggai, whose name means 'festal' or 'born on a feast day,' was a prophet active in the second year of the Persian king Darius (520 BC). His brief but pointed oracles, preserved in the two chapters bearing his name, challenged the returned exiles to stop neglecting the ruined temple and rebuild it. He is mentioned alongside Zechariah in Ezra 5:1 and 6:14 as one of the prophetic voices that spurred the community to complete the Second Temple. The Greek form of his name, Haggaios, is reflected in the Septuagint.
