The Zuzim, an ancient Transjordanian people defeated in Genesis 14:5; possibly identical with the Zamzummim
The Zuzim appear in Genesis 14:5 as one of several ancient peoples defeated by the eastern kings in their campaign through Transjordan. They dwelt in a place called Ham, somewhere between Bashan and Moab. Many scholars identify them with the Zamzummim mentioned in Deuteronomy 2:20, suggesting textual variation in the tribal name. Otherwise unknown, they represent the pre-Israelite population that the narrator presents as powerful ('mighty nations' in the Septuagint) but nonetheless defeatable.

1. sense 1 Spanish 'zuzitas' and English 'the-Zuzim' transliterate the gentilicial form, while French and German add the definite article. Genesis 14 preserves archaic geographical and ethnic information, listing peoples otherwise unknown to us. The Zuzim's defeat by Chedorlaomer and his allies sets the stage for Lot's capture and Abraham's rescue mission. These ancient peoples function narratively as the backdrop against which Abraham's faithfulness and military prowess stand out.
