Vashni, apparently a corrupted reading in 1 Chronicles 6:28; should be 'and the second' based on 1 Samuel 8:2
The Masoretic Text of 1 Chronicles 6:28 appears to give 'Vashni' as the name of Samuel's firstborn son. However, the parallel text in 1 Samuel 8:2 clearly identifies the firstborn as Joel and the second as Abijah. Most scholars conclude that 'Vashni' is a textual error for 'and the second' (וְהַשֵּׁנִי), with Joel's name having dropped out. Ancient versions support this reading, and modern translations often emend accordingly.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Spanish renders as 'Vasni' treating it as a name, while English offers 'and-the-second,' German 'und-zweiter'—revealing the interpretive divide. The LXX supports emendation, suggesting early awareness of the problem. This appears to be a case where scribal error created a 'ghost name' that never actually existed. First Chronicles' tendency to preserve damaged genealogical material means such textual difficulties are not uncommon in its lists. 1×
