Behold, lo! A demonstrative interjection drawing attention to a fact or situation; rarely 'whether, if.'
Hen is a forceful presentative particle that calls the listener to attention: 'Look! See! Behold!' Less widely used than its near-synonym hinneh, hen tends to appear in prose where it introduces a known fact upon which a conclusion or action must be based (Gen 3:22, 'Behold, the man has become like one of us'). It is especially common in the Pentateuch and in the speeches of Job, where it has a more argumentative, logical flavor than hinneh. Spanish 'he aqui,' French 'voici,' and German 'siehe' all serve as presentative markers, though none quite captures hen's particular nuance of 'given this fact, therefore...' In a single rare instance (Jer 2:10), hen functions as a conditional particle meaning 'whether.'
Senses
1. behold, lo (presentative interjection) — Presentative interjection meaning 'behold, lo, see!' drawing attention to a fact or dramatic revelation. Used 99 of 100 times, it introduces statements upon which action or conclusion depends (Gen 3:22; 15:3; 27:11). Especially frequent in Pentateuchal prose and Job's dialogues. Spanish 'he aqui,' French 'voici,' and German 'siehe' all function as attention-focusing discourse markers, though hen carries a distinctive logical-argumentative tone. 99×

2. whether, if (conditional particle) — Rare conditional or interrogative use functioning as 'whether, if,' introducing an indirect question rather than a presentative statement. Attested only in Jeremiah 2:10, where the prophet challenges Israel to investigate whether any nation has changed its gods. Spanish 'si' and English 'whether' capture this unique conditional sense, while French 'voici' and German 'siehe' level the distinction in their translations. 1×
