Hillel, father of the judge Abdon, from Pirathon
Hillel was the father of Abdon, one of Israel's judges who led for eight years (Judges 12:13-15). The name means 'he has praised,' from the same root as hallelujah. Hillel is called 'the Pirathonite,' indicating his hometown of Pirathon in Ephraim. Beyond his role as Abdon's father, Scripture tells us nothing else about him. His name, celebrating praise, was later made famous by the great Rabbi Hillel in the centuries before Christ.
Senses
1. sense 1 — The transliterations ('Hillel, Hilel') preserve this personal name across translations. Judges 12:13 introduces Abdon as 'son of Hillel the Pirathonite,' repeated in 12:15 at Abdon's death. The genealogical note serves to identify the judge's lineage and hometown. The name's meaning ('he has praised') reflects the worship-centered naming practice of Israel, where even a minor figure's name becomes a declaration that God is worthy of praise. 2×
