Hin; a Hebrew unit of liquid measure (~6 liters), used in sacrificial regulations for oil, wine, and water.
A unit of liquid volume equal to approximately six liters, or one-sixth of a bath. The hin appears exclusively in cultic legislation, measuring the quantities of oil, wine, and water required for various offerings and sacrifices. Exodus prescribes specific hin-fractions for the anointing oil (Exod 30:24) and daily libations (Exod 29:40), while Ezekiel's temple vision uses the hin in its reformed sacrificial system (Ezek 45–46). Leviticus 19:36 commands 'a just hin,' making it also a standard of commercial honesty. The term likely derives from an Egyptian loanword, though the Hebrew measure was significantly larger than its Egyptian counterpart.
Senses
1. hin (unit of liquid measure) — A unit of liquid measurement equaling roughly 6 liters (one-sixth of a bath), used exclusively in ritual and sacrificial contexts. Fractional amounts—a quarter-hin, a third-hin, a half-hin—specify precise quantities of oil and wine for grain offerings and libations (Exod 29:40; Num 15:4–10). Leviticus 19:36 extends the hin into the realm of just weights and measures. Ezekiel's temple vision prescribes the hin for future offerings (Ezek 45:24; 46:5–14). The Egyptian-derived term appears across all multilingual glosses with minimal adaptation—hin in Spanish, French, and German alike. 22×
