Hoshea ('salvation'): the original name of Joshua son of Nun; also the last king of Israel, the prophet Hosea, and other Israelite leaders.
The name הוֹשֵׁעַ means 'salvation' and belongs to several significant biblical figures. Most famously, it was the birth name of Joshua son of Nun before Moses added the divine name element, changing it to Yehoshua (Num 13:16) — a renaming that itself proclaims 'the LORD saves.' The prophet Hosea (Hos 1:1) bears the same name, and his life becomes a living parable of God's saving love for unfaithful Israel. The last king of the northern kingdom also bore this name (2 Kgs 17:1-6), creating a tragic irony: the king named 'salvation' presided over Israel's destruction. The Greek Septuagint renders the prophet's name as Ωσηε (Hosea) but Joshua's as Ιησους (Jesus), a distinction laden with later theological significance.
Senses
1. Hoshea (son of Nun / king of Israel) — The proper name Hoshea used for: (a) the original name of Joshua son of Nun before Moses renamed him Yehoshua (Num 13:8, 16; Deut 32:44), (b) Hoshea son of Elah, the last king of the northern kingdom of Israel who reigned during the Assyrian conquest (2 Kgs 15:30; 17:1-6; 18:1, 9-10), (c) an Ephraimite chief under David (1 Chr 27:20), and (d) a leader who sealed the covenant under Nehemiah (Neh 10:24). Spanish and German both render the name as 'Oseas' and 'Hosea/Hoshea' respectively. The concentration of references in 2 Kings reflects the historical narrative of Israel's final years. 13×

2. Hosea (the prophet) — The prophet Hosea (son of Beeri), who prophesied in the 8th century BC during the reigns of Uzziah through Hezekiah of Judah and Jeroboam II of Israel. All three occurrences appear in Hosea 1:1-2, the book's superscription and opening command. French renders the prophet's name as 'Osée,' distinguishing it slightly from the other bearers. The prophet's name is theologically charged: God commands the man named 'salvation' to marry an unfaithful wife, embodying the tension between divine deliverance and human waywardness that defines the entire book. 3×
