Hadoram (personal and tribal name)
A proper name with two referents: an Arabian tribe descended from Joktan (Gen 10:27; 1 Chr 1:21) and a son of the king of Hamath sent to David (1 Chr 18:10). The name appears in genealogical and diplomatic contexts, and is preserved across translations with minimal variation (Spanish Hadorán, French Hadoram). In 2 Samuel 8:10 the parallel text reads Joram, but the Greek and critical scholarship favor Hadoram as the original reading.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Used for both a tribal eponym (Gen 10:27; 1 Chr 1:21) and an individual diplomat (1 Chr 18:10). Translators uniformly retain the proper name, recognizing its dual function in genealogy and historical narrative. The cross-linguistic uniformity reflects the conventional practice of not translating personal names. 3×
