Hadad -- a proper name borne by several Edomite kings and an adversary of Solomon
Hadad (hadad, cognate with the storm-god Haddu/Adad) is a theophoric proper name borne by multiple figures in the Old Testament, all connected to Edom or its sphere. Hadad son of Bedad defeated Midian in the field of Moab and reigned from Avith as king of Edom (Gen 36:35-36; 1 Chr 1:46-47). Another Hadad succeeded Baal-hanan as the last named king of Edom (1 Chr 1:50-51, where he is also called Hadar in Gen 36:39). Most prominently, Hadad the Edomite was a royal prince who escaped Joab's massacre of Edomite males as a child, fled to Egypt, married Pharaoh's sister-in-law, and returned to become an adversary of Solomon (1 Kgs 11:14-22, 25). Every target language transliterates the name with negligible variation.
