Hagrite(s); a nomadic tribal group east of Gilead, also used as a gentilic adjective and patronymic.
The Hagrites were a semi-nomadic people dwelling east of the Jordan, possibly of Aramean or Ishmaelite descent. The tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half-Manasseh waged war against them and prevailed (1 Chr 5:10, 19-20), while Psalm 83:6 includes them among the confederacy plotting against Israel. As a gentilic adjective, Jaziz the Hagrite oversaw David's flocks (1 Chr 27:31), a role perhaps reflecting the pastoral expertise of his people. In 1 Chronicles 11:38 it appears as a patronymic: Mibhar ben-Hagri, one of David's mighty warriors.

Senses
1. Hagrites (tribal group) The Hagrites as a tribal people (plural noun), a nomadic group east of Gilead defeated by the Transjordanian tribes (1 Chr 5:10, 19-20) and listed among Israel's enemies in Ps 83:6. Spanish los hagriitas and hagritas reflect the collective plural. Their association with Ishmaelite and Aramean groups places them in the pastoral borderlands between settled Israel and the desert.

2. Hagrite (gentilic adjective) Gentilic adjective designating an individual as belonging to the Hagrite people. Applied to Jaziz the Hagrite (1 Chr 27:31), David's overseer of flocks. Spanish el agareno and English 'the Hagrite' function as ethnic descriptors. The appointment suggests the Hagrites' reputation as skilled herdsmen was recognized even by the Israelite court.

3. Hagri (personal name) A patronymic personal name, Hagri, identifying the father of Mibhar among David's mighty warriors (1 Chr 11:38). Spanish Hagrí preserves the proper-name function. The parallel passage in 2 Samuel 23:36 reads 'Bani the Gadite,' reflecting textual uncertainty about whether this is a personal name or a corrupted gentilic.
