Hagar -- Sarah's Egyptian maidservant, mother of Ishmael, central to the Abrahamic covenant narratives
Hagar (hagar, possibly 'flight' or 'stranger') is the Egyptian maidservant of Sarah whom Abraham took as a concubine at Sarah's suggestion when Sarah remained childless (Gen 16:1-3). After conceiving Ishmael, Hagar was driven out by Sarah's harsh treatment and fled into the wilderness, where the angel of the Lord found her by a spring on the road to Shur and promised her innumerable descendants (Gen 16:7-14). She became the only person in Genesis to give God a name: El Roi, 'the God who sees me.' Later, after Isaac's birth, she and Ishmael were expelled permanently, and God again preserved them in the wilderness of Beersheba (Gen 21:9-21). Paul allegorizes Hagar as representing the covenant of Sinai and slavery in Galatians 4:24-25. Spanish, French, and German all retain the name Hagar (French: Agar).
Senses
1. sense 1 — Sarah's Egyptian maidservant who bore Ishmael to Abraham. Her narrative spans flight and divine encounter at the well of Beer-lahai-roi (Gen 16:1-14), expulsion with Ishmael (Gen 21:9-21), and Pauline allegory of the Sinai covenant (Gal 4:24-25). All twelve OT occurrences designate this single individual. French Agar, Spanish and German Hagar preserve the name. 12×
