Dibon — a Moabite city on the King's Highway, allotted to Gad and Reuben, target of prophetic oracles
Dibon (דִּיבוֹן) was a city in the tableland of Moab, about three miles north of the Arnon River on the ancient King's Highway. Israel captured it from Sihon (Num 21:30), and it was assigned to Gad and Reuben (Num 32:3, 34). The famous Mesha Stele was discovered at this site in 1868, confirming the city's significance in Moabite royal history. In the prophetic literature, Dibon figures in oracles against Moab: Isaiah envisions its inhabitants weeping at their high places (Isa 15:2), and Jeremiah announces its destruction (Jer 48:18, 22). It also appears in Israel's wilderness itinerary as Dibon-Gad (Num 33:45-46). Spanish 'Dibon,' Arabic ديبون.
