Dor; a Canaanite coastal city in Manasseh's territory, south of Mount Carmel on the Mediterranean.
The name of an ancient Canaanite port city located on the Mediterranean coast south of Mount Carmel, within the tribal allotment of Manasseh. Known in cuneiform sources as Du'ru, Dor appears in conquest lists (Josh 11:2; 12:23) and in the record of Manasseh's failure to drive out its inhabitants (Judg 1:27). The phrase 'Naphath-Dor' (heights/coast of Dor) designates its broader district. Under Solomon, it served as one of the twelve administrative districts (1 Kgs 4:11). The modern site is identified with Tantura on the Israeli coast.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Dor, a Canaanite coastal city on the Mediterranean south of Mount Carmel, assigned to Manasseh but never fully conquered (Judg 1:27; 1 Chr 7:29). Listed among the kings defeated by Joshua (Josh 12:23) and mentioned in the northern coalition narrative (Josh 11:2). The compound Naphath-Dor or Naphoth-Dor (Josh 11:2; 12:23; 1 Kgs 4:11) refers to the surrounding district or coast-heights. Under Solomon it became an administrative center (1 Kgs 4:11). All translations consistently render 'Dor,' and the site is identified with modern Tantura along the Israeli Mediterranean coast. 7×
