Debir — a Canaanite royal city in Judah's hill country, anciently called Kiriath-sepher ('city of the book')
A place name identifying a Canaanite royal city in the southern highlands of Judah near Hebron, formerly known as Kiriath-sepher ('city of the book') and Kiriath-sannah. Its conquest is narrated twice: first by Joshua in the southern campaign (Josh 10:38-39; 11:21) and then by Othniel son of Kenaz, who wins Caleb's daughter Achsah as a prize for capturing it (Josh 15:15-17; Judg 1:11-13). Debir later appears among the Levitical cities assigned to the Aaronite priests (Josh 21:15; 1 Chr 6:43). All translations preserve the name unchanged: Debir across English, Spanish, French, and German.

Senses
1. Debir (place name) The proper toponym Debir, designating a specific Canaanite city-state in the Judean hill country. It appears in conquest narratives (Josh 10:38-39; 11:21; 12:13), tribal boundary lists (Josh 15:15, 49), the Othniel episode (Judg 1:11-13), and Levitical city allocations (Josh 21:15; 1 Chr 6:43). The directional form Debirah occurs in Josh 10:38. One occurrence in Josh 10:3 names Debir as a personal name — the king of Eglon — though BDB treats this as a homonymous proper noun. Cross-linguistic glosses are transparent: Debir/Devir uniformly across all target languages. 13×
