Gerar — an ancient city in the Negev south of Gaza, prominent in the Abraham and Isaac narratives.
Gerar was a Philistine city situated in the western Negev, traditionally identified with Tell Abu Hureirah south of Gaza. It features prominently in the patriarchal narratives: Abraham sojourned there under King Abimelech (Gen 20:1-2), and Isaac later settled in the same region, digging wells in the Wadi Gerar (Gen 26:17). The name appears with directional and prepositional forms — 'Gerar-ward' (Gen 10:19), 'in Gerar,' 'from Gerar' — but always denotes the same geographic location. Spanish 'Guerar' and French/German 'Gerar' preserve the toponym with minimal phonetic adaptation.

Senses
1. Gerar (place name) The proper name of an ancient Philistine city in the Negev, south of Gaza, associated with the patriarchal sojourns of Abraham (Gen 20:1-2) and Isaac (Gen 26:1, 6). It also appears in the table of nations as a Canaanite border marker (Gen 10:19) and in Asa's military campaign (2 Chr 14:12-13). All ten occurrences refer to the same geographic site, with prepositional variants (in-Gerar, to-Gerar, from-Gerar) reflecting normal locative usage rather than distinct senses. 10×
