Gerar — an ancient city in the Negev south of Gaza, prominent in the Abraham and Isaac narratives.
Gerar was a Philistine city situated in the western Negev, traditionally identified with Tell Abu Hureirah south of Gaza. It features prominently in the patriarchal narratives: Abraham sojourned there under King Abimelech (Gen 20:1-2), and Isaac later settled in the same region, digging wells in the Wadi Gerar (Gen 26:17). The name appears with directional and prepositional forms — 'Gerar-ward' (Gen 10:19), 'in Gerar,' 'from Gerar' — but always denotes the same geographic location. Spanish 'Guerar' and French/German 'Gerar' preserve the toponym with minimal phonetic adaptation.
