Gileadite — a person from Gilead, the Transjordanian highland east of the Jordan River
The gentilic adjective גִּלְעָדִי (Gileadi) identifies a person from Gilead, the forested highland region east of the Jordan known for its balm, pastures, and fiercely independent warriors. The most famous Gileadite is Jephthah, the outcast judge who defeated Ammon and made a tragic vow (Judg 11:1, 40; 12:7). The aged Barzillai the Gileadite loyally supplied David during Absalom's revolt (2 Sam 17:27; 19:31-32), earning a lasting place in royal memory (1 Kgs 2:7). The shibboleth incident at the Jordan fords (Judg 12:4-6) further etched the Gileadites into Israel's collective consciousness. Spanish 'galaadita,' Arabic الْجِلْعَادِيِّ.
