Gehazi -- servant of the prophet Elisha, known for his greed and resulting leprosy
Gehazi (gechazi, possibly 'valley of vision') is the personal servant of the prophet Elisha, whose narrative arc in 2 Kings traces a trajectory from trusted attendant to cautionary figure of greed. He first appears as a capable intermediary, suggesting to Elisha that the Shunammite woman has no son (2 Kgs 4:12-14), and later running ahead with Elisha's staff to lay on the dead child (4:25-31). His downfall comes when he secretly pursues Naaman to extract the gifts Elisha had refused, lying to both his master and the healed leper (2 Kgs 5:20-27). Elisha pronounces Naaman's leprosy upon Gehazi and his descendants forever. He reappears one final time recounting Elisha's miracles to the king (2 Kgs 8:4-5). Spanish Giezi, French Guehazi, and German Gehasi preserve the name.
