Gedaliah -- 'Yah is great'; name borne by the governor of Judah and several other men
Gedaliah (meaning 'YHWH is great') is a personal name borne by several individuals in the Hebrew Bible. The most prominent is Gedaliah son of Ahikam, whom Nebuchadnezzar appointed governor of Judah after the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC (Jer 40-41). His brief governorship and assassination by Ishmael son of Nethaniah triggered the flight to Egypt and is commemorated in the Jewish fast of Tzom Gedaliah. Other bearers include an ancestor of Zephaniah (Zeph 1:1) and a priest of Jeshua's line who had married a foreign wife (Ezra 10:18). German Gedalja, Spanish Gedalias, and French Guedalia all transliterate the name with minor phonological adaptation.

Senses
1. Gedaliah (personal name) The proper name Gedaliah ('YHWH is great'), principally denoting Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the Babylonian-appointed governor of Judah whose assassination is narrated in Jeremiah 40-41 and whose tragic end precipitated the remnant's flight to Egypt. The same name applies to at least two other biblical figures: an ancestor of Zephaniah (Zeph 1:1) and a priest in Ezra 10:18. Cross-lingual transliterations -- Spanish Gedalias, French Guedalia, German Gedalja -- show only phonological adaptation, confirming a single onomastic entry with no semantic subdivision.
