To rise up, grow high, be exalted — of waters rising, plants growing, or God triumphing gloriously
A Qal verb (גָּאָה) meaning 'to rise up' or 'be exalted,' covering natural phenomena and divine triumph. Its most celebrated use is the Song of the Sea — 'I will sing to the LORD, for he has triumphed gloriously' (Exod 15:1, 21), where the cognate accusative construction גָּאֹה גָּאָה intensifies the verb into a shout of cosmic victory. Elsewhere the same verb describes rising waters in Ezekiel's temple river (Ezek 47:5) and rushes growing without water (Job 8:11), grounding divine exaltation in the observable world of things that surge upward.

Senses
1. to rise up, grow high, be exalted To rise up, grow, or be exalted, used across literal and figurative contexts. Of waters rising: Ezekiel's temple river that had risen (גָּאוּ) to swimming depth (Ezek 47:5). Of plants growing: Job 8:11 asks whether rushes can grow (יִגְאֶה) without water. Of divine triumph: the iconic Song of the Sea (Exod 15:1, 21) with its intensifying cognate accusative גָּאֹה גָּאָה, 'he has triumphed gloriously.' Of Job's head being lifted up under divine scrutiny (Job 10:16). Spanish ensalzar ('to exalt') and French s'élever ('to rise') together capture the dual physical and theological dimensions.
