Bethuel, nephew of Abraham, son of Nahor, and father of Rebekah and Laban.
A proper name (perhaps meaning 'man of God,' comparable to מְתוּאֵל) designating the son of Nahor, Abraham's brother, and the father of Rebekah. Bethuel plays a pivotal but surprisingly passive role in the patriarchal narratives — he is named as Rebekah's father when Abraham's servant seeks a bride for Isaac (Gen 24:15, 24, 47, 50), yet Laban does most of the speaking. He is consistently identified as 'Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-Aram' (Gen 25:20; 28:2, 5). Translations are uniform: Spanish 'Betuel', French 'Bethuel', German 'Betuel.'

Senses
1. Bethuel Bethuel — a proper name (possibly 'man of God') for the son of Nahor and Milcah, nephew of Abraham, and father of Rebekah and Laban. He appears primarily in the betrothal narrative of Genesis 24, where Abraham's servant travels to the city of Nahor in Aram-Naharaim to find a wife for Isaac (Gen 24:15, 24, 47, 50). The Priestly source identifies him as 'Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-Aram' (Gen 25:20; 28:2, 5). His relative silence in the marriage negotiation, where Laban takes the lead, has long intrigued commentators. Cross-linguistic evidence is highly consistent: Spanish 'Betuel', French 'Bethuel', German 'Betuel'.
