Barkos appears only in the post-exilic census lists as the ancestor of a family of Nethinim, the temple servants who assisted the Levites. The name's etymology is uncertain, though it may have Babylonian connections. Like many names in Ezra and Nehemiah, it preserves the memory of families who maintained their identity through exile and chose to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple community.
