Beriah — personal name borne by several Israelites, most notably a son of Asher and a son of Ephraim named in sorrow
Beriah (בְּרִיעָה) is a personal name borne by at least four individuals in the Old Testament, with a folk etymology connecting it to רָעָה ('evil, misfortune'). The most poignant bearer is a son of Ephraim, named Beriah 'because disaster had befallen his house' — his brothers having been killed by the men of Gath in a cattle raid (1 Chr 7:23). The earliest and most genealogically prominent Beriah is a son of Asher (Gen 46:17; Num 26:44-45), ancestor of the Beriite clan. A third Beriah appears among the Benjaminites of Aijalon who drove out the inhabitants of Gath (1 Chr 8:13, 16). A fourth is a Levite son of Shimei in the Gershonite line (1 Chr 23:10-11). Spanish 'Bería' and French 'Béria' transliterate the name.
