Spotted, dappled, marked with patches of color (of livestock and horses)
Describes animals whose coats display irregular patches or spots of contrasting color. The word appears in Genesis alongside two companion adjectives — 'streaked' and 'speckled' — in Jacob's negotiations with Laban over flocks (Gen 31:10, 12). In Zechariah 6:3, 6 it describes one team of horses among the four chariots emerging from between mountains of bronze. The root may connect to 'hail' (barad), suggesting a coat 'sprinkled' with marks as if pelted by hailstones.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Spotted or dappled in coat color, used of sheep, goats, and horses. In Gen 31:10, 12 the word forms a triad with 'streaked' (aqqudim) and 'speckled' (nequddim), each denoting a distinct coat pattern among Jacob's divinely favored livestock. In Zech 6:3, 6 it describes horses pulling apocalyptic chariots. Spanish renders it 'manchados' (blotched) and 'grises' (grey-mottled), while French uses 'tacheté' (spotted), both capturing the core idea of irregular markings. The Syriac cognate bardā (hail-marked) supports the etymological link to precipitation imagery. 4×
